The European Coordination Committee on Veterinary Training (ECCVT) has adopted its position paper, “ECCVT Recommendations to manage expectations around the value of Day One Competences”. This document addresses growing concerns about unrealistic expectations placed on new veterinary graduates and aims to provide clarity for all stakeholders: students, employers, academics, and veterinary statutory bodies.

The paper reaffirms that Day One Competences (D1Cs) represent the minimum skill level expected at graduation from an accredited veterinary education establishment. These competences should be further developed during professional life by experience, life-long learning and continuous professional development.

ECCVT calls on the profession to align expectations with reality and to foster environments that support young veterinarians as they transition from education to independent practice.

Together, we continue to advance veterinary education and practice across Europe.
