The European Coordination Committee on Veterinary Training (ECCVT) convened its 42nd meeting on 23 October 2025 at the FVE offices in Brussels, under the chairmanship of Massenzio Fornasier. The meeting brought together representatives from EAEVE, EBVS, FVE, and IVSA Europe to discuss the modernisation of veterinary education in Europe in light of new legislative and societal developments.
Central to the discussions was the implementation of the amended Professional Qualifications Directive (EU) 2025/1223, which introduces new requirements related to biosecurity, One Health, and business and communication training. The Committee emphasised that these updates reflect the evolving responsibilities of veterinarians and the growing need for interdisciplinary competences.
Highlights included the presentation of the EBVS-led COST Action “VET-PASS” proposal, aimed at harmonising postgraduate veterinary training and establishing a European database on specialisation pathways, and EAEVE’s proposal of an ECCVT working group for the long-term review of Day 1 Competences, with a new version planned for adoption by 2029.
Members also discussed the increasing importance of veterinarians in implementing and assessing biosecurity measures and called for the development of structured CPD and mentorship programmes to support competence-based education.
The next ECCVT meeting will take place in March 2026 under the chairmanship of EBVS.
